Unfortunately there has been a growing statistic of young children who accidentally shoot themselves or others when coming across a loaded firearm in their paths. In a study showed by the Washington post, there have been 43 reported cases of a toddler age 3 or younger finding a gun and shooting someone. 13 of those 43 cases have inadvertently resulted in the deaths of the children who found the guns. Just recently on October 17th, a 6-year old boy in Chicago found his father’s gun on top of their refrigerator and fatally shot his 3-year old brother in the head. CNN news reports that the father of the boys is facing felony child endangerment charges.
Cases like these need to be used as an example; it is not safe to have firearms in an environment with young children. Kids find a way to get into virtually anything, and accidentally stumbling upon a firearm could be the last thing they do. The last thing we want to do is open up another huge debate on gun control and regulation, but something definitely does have to be done in regards to this growing issue. Too many lives are senselessly being lost and there has to be a solution for it. Some suggest that the laws for storage of a firearm need to be enforced more, and that seems like it may be the best short-term answer.
If gun owners took the time to safely secure their firearms in a lockbox or safe, then it would greatly lessen the chances of a child (or anyone for that matter) coming across the weapon and potentially harming themselves or others. Simply placing a firearm on top of a refrigerator or on a shelf in your home does not cut it. Those locations are easily accessible by children and guns being left in those locations lead to most of these unfortunate incidents. In addition to that, there is also the risk of someone other than a child coming across your weapon. Imagine if a criminal or someone with poor intentions happens to see your firearm laying out in the open, not securely locked away out of sight. That person can easily take the gun and use it for any wrongful deeds, and if the firearm is registered to you, you will be the first person questioned for someone else’s actions.
These are some of the things you need to think about when you haphazardly throw your
gun atop your refrigerator, entertainment center, etc.. Anything can happen, and anyone can get their hands on it if it is just left lying around.
